diamond-alloys-scruffed1-300x224We think that alloys wheels are a focal point to any car! However, it’s a sad fact that every day wear and tear will cause them to degrade, and it’s easy to get them scuffed or chipped when parking close to a pavement. This picture illustrates the kind of state many damaged alloy wheels usually look like when they arrive at our London Refurbishment Center.

img_3071-2smallAt Diamond Alloys we can offer a variety of alloy wheel repair and refurbishment techniques to bring your alloys back to life and looking as good as new. If you are looking for a standard silver finish, we recommend our powder coat process which completely covers the alloy wheel with a smooth surface ready for painting, offering loads of protection from the elements, particularly useful this time of year when the wetter weather sets in.

Alternatively, for alloy wheels with a little more design, we recommend our Diamond Cut service. A high quality repair service which can only be carried out on site, so beware of smart repair services who cannot offer a proper diamond cut repair service. This process cuts off a small layer of metal to remove the damage and can be offset with a painted power coat insert for a striking look for your alloy wheels.

Welding Alloys Wheels

weld1Whilst we welcome the announcement this week from the Chancellor that an investment will be put into repairing potholes on the roads of the UK, we know all too well this will take a long time to implement and that damage to our beloved alloy wheels will continue.

Alloys wheels mostly sustain scratches, scrapes or kerbing damage but on occasion more serious damage can result in a crack or tear along the outside rim, as pictured here, usually sustained by hitting a pothole. The good news is that damage like this can easily be repaired and save you having to buy new rims, which is a more costly solution.

weld2After the weld repair has been completed the guys in our prep room fill and sand the alloy to produce a sound surface once again. Wheels are then powder coated to give a really smooth finish before being painted and lacquered. Once complete, you will never know any damage had been sustained!

Diamond Alloys can offer a welding crack repair service in addition to painting and diamond cutting, enabling you to get the job done all at once and in just a few days. If your alloy wheel has sustained damage like this, just send us a picture and we will be able to tell you if it can be repaired. Call us today on 0208 845 7788 and see if you can save money by opting for a weld repair service for you alloy wheels.

Multi-Piece Wheels. What’s the difference?

Unlike one-piece wheels, multi-piece wheels are put together after manufacturing to produce different results.  Production is just as fascinating.  Respect for the care and refurbishment of the wheels is paramount.

As the name suggests, this production take two or three outputs from the manufacturing process and makes a wheel.

The hub can be cast or forged.  The rim sections for 3-piece wheels are normally spun from disks of aluminum. These are then bolted to the hub and a sealant applied.  They were developed for racing in the early 1970s and are now used especially in the 17″ and larger diameters.  With this many pieces, special applications are possible, given the option of custom-tailoring the wheel.

Normally, the rims for 2-piece wheels are cast or spun.  They then have their hub bolted, pressed or welded on.  At the upper end of the market it is possible to find forged rim and hub 2-piece wheels.  Otherwise, 2-piece wheels are less customisable, but given their simpler assembler, less costly.

Newer innovations in multi-piece alloy wheel construction have led to processes such as High Light Technology.  This uses rollers to compress and elongate the material along the barrel of a low-pressure cast aluminum wheel to obtain the desired profile. Used in Formula 1, and extremely exclusive applications, the wheel is similar to a forged wheel. For performance wheels, the benefits are obvious.  A dramatic reduction in wheel weight with enhanced structural rigidity means that the wheel becomes the ultimate alloy.

The ultimate in alloy wheels deserve the ultimate in care.  Looking after such precision parts of your car includes refurbishing these precious components.

Take Care of Your Alloys this Winter

As alloys are often not only an investment, but also something that is integral to the unique aesthetic of your car, there really is no excuse for not looking after them. Alloys particularly need TLC during the cold winter months, so read on for an easy guide to keeping your wheels in tip top condition.

clean-alloy-wheelClean them regularly
If there is only one thing you take away from this blog, it should be that the best thing you can do for your alloys is to give them a quick clean on a regular basis.

When you’re washing your car, simply rinse your rims with a fine spray. Once they’re soaked, rub the surface to remove any lingering dust, then apply an alloy wheel cleaner with a finer brush to ensure even the hard-to-reach spots are, well, spotless. After this, rinse the wheels again and dry with a microfibre cloth. For added protection, you can also occasionally apply wheel wax – although this should only be done every few months.

Take care on the roads
It is a sad fact of life that many of Britain’s roads are in a state of disrepair. Where possible, avoid those pesky potholes and take extra care when parking  and manoeuvring near kerbs. The more care you take, the less likely it is you’ll cause unsightly or problematic damage to your alloys.

diamond-alloys-new-member-andrei-tyreGet the alloys repaired in good time
At Diamond Alloys we know that sometimes it’s impossible to avoid damaging your alloys. To minimise ongoing damage we always advise you to get them repaired as soon as possible, preferably by a specialist. Our experts have decades’ experience of repairing alloys and use the latest technology to ensure they are not just repaired but come back looking brand new.

Take them off when you switch to winter tyres
It may seem like an admission of defeat, but it’s sometimes sensible to put a cheaper pair of alloys on your car when you switch to winter tyres. This is because there is much more moisture and dirt on the roads at this time of year, and the best way to ensure your alloys can survive the winter is to not expose them to winter conditions at all. Make sure your alloys are stored in a humidity and moisture free environment and they’ll still be pristine when you come to put them back on your car in spring.

If you have any questions about these tips, or want to chat to us about the best way to protect or repair your alloys this winter, please give us a call on 0208 845 7788 today.

Diamond Cut Wheels or Painted Wheels?

Alloy wheels look great but kerbside damage, scrapes and chippings from the road can damage your rims. This can be very annoying and costly to replace. However, there is a much more cost effective solution available to solve the problem: refurbishing your alloy wheels.

At Diamond Alloys, we offer a wide range of alloy wheel refurbishments including a powder coat refurbishment and our most popular Diamond Cut service.

The Diamond cut process involves removing a small amount of metal from the wheel using a very precise specialist machine.  The way to tell if your alloy wheels have been diamond cut is if the faces of the wheels are very shiny- almost like the back of a CD.

A Diamond cut finish is not possible on all cars, in that case you can opt for a powder coat refurbishment. The wheel is repaired first, usually with filler where kerbing has damaged the rim, it is then powder coated and covered in a protective lacquer, which also gives the wheel its shine. The big advantages of this type of wheel is that if you damage your wheel it’s easy to refurbish it.

Whether you choose for a Diamond Cut or a powder coat refurbishment, alloy wheels need care and attention to keep them looking stunning, so we advise to check out our cleaning tips.

A Diamond Cut cannot be done as a smart repair and so we highly recommend you use a reputable alloy wheel repair and refurbishment company, like Diamond Alloys London, that has their own premises and a professional Diamond Cutting machine.

wheel-repairAnyone who owns and loves alloys will know that they are hard work, needing a high level of regular love and attention if they are to remain in tip top condition. If they need such a high level of attention from owners, in fact, just imagine how much effort needs to be put in by an alloy repair service! Not only does the service need to correct any damage, but they also have a duty to return the alloy in the best possible condition, so that the customer’s wheels are protected for as long as possible.

It is for this reason that Diamond Alloys never does ‘smart’ repairs, because we don’t believe in leaving a job half done. Our experts love alloys, and they flatly refuse to let any roll out of the workshop unless they have been restored to perfect condition!

IMG_9904-2Take a look at this photograph, for example. Here our expert is cleaning between the gaps of the AMG badge on a Mercedes alloy, ensuring that all the sanding dust is removed and that the best possible finish can be achieved.

This is the kind of thing that can only be done by taking the time to care for every inch of the alloy, and only by someone with extensive experience on repair and refurbishment. When we work on your alloys, no matter what condition they are in when they come to us, our team IMG_9903-2will conduct a full service to ensure that the alloys have the best possible finish and that they can stay in top condition for as long as possible.
